Variations on Love and Loss

Friday, June 20, 2025
Mixon Hall, Cleveland Institute of Music
7:30PM

Part humorous parody and part spectacular display of virtuosity, Variations on a Theme by Paganini is more than worthy of the nightclub audience for which it was written. Two-time finalist for the Pulitzer Prize, Bright Sheng draws on Chinese sonorities and a neo-Romantic folkloric style in Four Movements which evoke humor, a savage dance, and lonesome nostalgia. ChamberFest Cleveland is honored to present the world premiere of “Oh, My Son,” a deeply personal work, commemorating the tragic loss of a family friend. Finally, bask in the glow of Schubert’s incredibly powerful Cello Quintet, the last work he ever wrote, with its endless flow of sublime melodies and wondrous melting beauty.
