The evening begins with Ravel’s jazzy neoclassicism for violin and piano. Trumpeter Brandon Ridenour’s “full-blooded, atmospheric arrangements” (The New York Times) of Vivaldi arias and Beatles tunes give way to a set of miniature musical meditations on everything from cats to celibacy. Finally, with one of the most delightful chamber works of the nineteenth century, Saint-Saëns pays harmonious homage to the Baroque era, filled with florid elegance and energetic explosions of color.
