The Unbearable Lightness of Being uses a beloved pet named Karenin to explore the notion of selfless love, and this program adds a musical dimension. The graceful wistfulness and sheer lyrical beauty of Mozart’s Viola Quintet are a loving tribute to the instrument closest to the composer’s heart. Janáček’s fun and frenetic chamber concerto has an animal theme, variously evoking a grumpy hedgehog, a fidgety squirrel, and “a scene from a fairy-tale, where everybody is arguing.” Possibly the greatest French piano trio of the 19th century, Saint-Saëns’ musical fireworks and subtle, searching harmonies are guaranteed to leave every listener with a smile.
