The two monumental works on this program represent with striking clarity Western art music’s shift away from the order and restraint of the 18th century and towards the impassioned expressiveness of Romanticism. Mozart’s Piano Quartet finds the composer expanding his palette of musical gestures, harmonically presaging Schumann and closing with a finale of dazzling pianistic virtuosity. Romanticism then resounds in full force in Schubert’s “Cello Quintet,” its profound and rich lyricism announcing a bold step into the new order.
